Back in 2008. a friend of Jim Pino‘s (sax, lead vocals) was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through conversations with her, Jim, and other members of the band discovered that the battle with breast cancer is in reality, half the battle. The other part of the battle is just as important. Support of loved ones and friends, the physical comfort, and many specialty items needed to help in the recovery. The problems that are faced by The Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven, and the Cancer Center at Middlesex Hospital are due to rising costs of everything health care related, they have to focus as much on the medical treatment, and some areas just can not be funded to the levels that they want. So Jim, Skip, and the members of Free Play decided to do something about it. In2009, the first Beach Jam for Breast cancer took place in partnership with the Westbrook Elks Lodge.
Since then, Free Play, and the Westbrook Elks Lodge have raised of Seventy Nine Thousand dollars for patient care services at Smilow Cancer Hospital, and their newest partner, The Cancer center at Middlesex Hospital. The goal for 2014 is even more ambitious. Free Play and the Elks want to raise FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS! BUT THEY WILL NEED YOUR HELP. Please spread the word, buy tickets, and donate.
